Dear Friend:

Greetings!

Our Family Circle Foundation- Friends of Lumina University USA cordially invite you to accompany us in the Health Expedition to Mbaise, Nigeria. Annually, we have held health events in Newark, New Jersey. For 2019 we are visiting the rural community of Ezinihitte, Mbaise where health care services is very much needed. This event is from January 15th to Feb 5th 2019 . This Mission of healing & hope will be led by the Rev. Douglas Bendall, Ph.D , president/founder of Newark School of Theology, Professor Afua Ampuiw of Seton Hall School of Nursing, Honorable Wayne Smith, Mayor Emeritus of the Township of Irvington, NJ, Dr. Munene Karuri and many others will bring light, love and resources to Ezinihitte Mbaise, Imo State.

During this event, we shall begin to equip our Mother & Child Global Hospital, to begin Saving lives.

Our Volunteer Team has the distinct pleasure of volunteering our professional services to help make a donated hospital functional, to save lives in the region.  According to the World Bank, Nigeria has the third highest incidents of Mother-Child deaths.  We hope to make our hospital functional to help lower the death rate and eradicate poverty in this rural area. We will introduce the concepts and the purposes of The Friends of Lumina University in Mbaise  and we hope to network and build a collective of volunteers and organizers.

The poverty in Mbaise, Nigeria is of major concern. Poverty, along with widespread desolation, hunger, lack of resources and jobs have reached astronomical rates. There are no programs and no projects, and poverty has astronomically increased since the 1967 Biafra – Nigerian war caused loss of lives, livestock and destruction of property. Today, there is limited clean running water, no steady source of electricity, no public health care system, no higher educational institution and limited food. Life is brutal and short!

The Friends of Lumina University USA, therefore, has taken it upon themselves to bring insight, funds, and resources to revive Mbaise to enhance the quality of life in the area.

To help decrease the infant mortality rates, we plan to visit and bring healthcare materials, supplies and equipment to support our Mother & Child Global Health Hospital, which was donated to us by the Itu Ezinihitte Community. Our focus is to provide resources and talents acquisition.

Meanwhile, we are appealing to healthcare and higher educational institutions in our region to come together with us in this Lumina Consortium of Hope.

We are asking for your financial support with getting our Mother & Child Global Hospital operational to begin saving lives.  The Fundraising effort of this event will enable the Volunteer Team to visit the rural community of Mbaise to assess the educational, economic, health care and community development needs of Mbaise.

During the 1967 catastrophic war between Biafra and Nigeria, many people were slaughtered and many of their children and women suffered a form of malnutrition called Kwasiokor, and other forms of deadly diseases. Their homes were vandalized and destroyed. Many were made refugees. And the prevalence of some preventable and curable diseases like Typhoid, Malaria, Diabetes, Hypertension (HBP) and all forms of mental illnesses are causing the premature death of many economically deprived Mbaise people.

Nevertheless, members of our Volunteer Team are still working on fundraising for this trip. We are asking you to become a Friend of Lumina University USA at the level of your choice. Please consider supporting us financially to equip and staff our Maternal & Child Global Hospital. I recommend a gift of $50, $100 or $150 but of course, any amount is more than welcome. Gifts are tax deductible and can be made out to Our Family Circle –Fund for Lumina University, c/o City National Bank of New Jersey, 900 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey 07102

Thank you for considering a generous donation option in support of This Mission of Healing & Hope!  Also, please support our Mission of healing & hope through your prayers and or giving. This trip would be impossible without the generosity of people like you.

I’m excited about the challenges this new opportunity presents to me in my own 35 years of community service and education. I am looking forward to sharing about it with you when I return.

Sincerely:

Dr. Debra Keno, Health Care, Chairwoman
